From jimells@midmaine.com Sun, 14 Jul 2002 04:21:04 -0400 Date: Sun, 14 Jul 2002 04:21:04 -0400 From: Jim Ellsworth jimells@midmaine.com Subject: [Meimc-publication] FudaFest Bust (First Draft) Two Thousand Dollars Seized in Raid. Women and children frightened by police dressed as soldiers and = brandishing assault rifles. In a display of naked aggression design to spoil the annual summer = celebration known as FUDAFest, approximately fifty officers from various = state agencies served a search warrant on Aaron Fuda of North Norway = Maine at 3:30 pm on Saturday, July 13. The State Police Tactical Team, = dessed like "Rambo", complete with camo uniforms, painted faces, and = automatic assault rifles ran out of the woods into a clearing where = several hundred working class folks celebrated a Maine summer day with = live music, swimming, and body painting. The search warrant (which I saw) included a recent aerial photograph of = Mr. Fuda's property and specified that the police were allowed to search = the premises and all persons on the property for marijuana, other = illegal drugs, any cash which might be connected to illegal drug = activity, and firearms located in the vicinity of any seized items. The tactical squad rushed in without warning or announcing themselves = and immediately moved to "secure" the area surrounding an old school = bus, which Mr. Fuda uses for a camp. Two officers, brandishing automatic = weapons, climbed atop the bus and established a lookout on the highest = point of the concert area.=20 All participants were told to leave the area for about two hours while = the search was carried out. Party goers were not allowed to remove their = property or their vehicles, and at least one unclothed woman was not = allowed to return to her tent to retrieve clothing. Some = "suspicious-looking" folks were searched on their way off the property, = but most participants were not searched or questioned. A seven-year old = girl, when confronted by armed men who have sworn to "protect and = serve", showed her disgust for the sorry episode by making a show out of = turning her pockets inside out and demonstrating that she was not = carrying any contraband. In addition to the tactical squad, I observed the Maine Drug Enforcement = Agency, a person who appeared to be an undercover narcotics officer, = Sheriff's Deputies, and an ambulance. All that was missing was a = helicopter and a tank. Several of the officers who were dressed as = soldiers also sported knee pads, presumably to allow them to quickly = drop to their knees and take aim at the peaceful crowd, which included = families with children and babies. The police, after collecting their "protection money" of $2000 from Mr. = Fuda's bus, left with the cash, a handful of plants found in the woods, = and small quantities of other contraband. Mr. Fuda had collected the = money from the festival participants to help pay for the bands and = porta-potties. I observed one young officer excitedly offering the = fruits of his labor to a Maine DEA agent: he had found a small pipe = lying on the ground. Quite a payoff considering the cost of the = carefully-planned and well-executed raid. When the police finally allowed the festival to continue, an impassioned = plea was issued to raise funds for Mr. Fuda. In a true show of = working-class solidarity, $1000 was quickly raised from the angry and = frightened crowd. One speaker thanked the police for not hurting = anybody, and also thanked them for creating five hundred more radicals. = "The police are our best recruiters", observed a festival organizer. There was a distinct air of unreality as the crowd realized we were = surrounded by heavily armed men and women. Is this what President Bush = means when he says that Osama bin Laden hates American "freedom"? It's = hard to describe what it feels like to calmly ask questions of young men = and women who are brandishing such powerful weapons. I asked a tactical = unit member if he liked his job. He replied that he did, so I asked him = if he really thought he was doing a public service by busting up a = peaceful party on private property. He replied, "I'm just following = orders". I pointed out that's what the Nazis said, too. His embarrassed = silence spoke louder than words. One must wonder why the police find a gathering of working-class folks = to be such a threat. The truth is, they have plenty of reason to be = nervous. Whenever working people (and that includes homemakers, folks = who don't have a job, and students) turn off the TV and talk to one = another, there's trouble ahead. Inevitably we talk about the true nature = of our country and the repressive system we live under. Talk leads to = understanding. Understanding leads to organization, and organization = leads to action. If I were a member of the wealthy class, I'd be worried = too... There were no arrests and no charges have been filed to date, but the = police left with the promise that they would return, no doubt planning = to hit Mr. Fuda with a dizzying array of charges and an expensive legal = defense in the near future.
